The
project

The Bibliomedia Project's goal was to provide an integration of the web version of the old OPAC of the University of Padova in its Web version, expecially intended for retrieving digital content, full text and multimedia objects.
Starting from the 6th of September 2007 the new OPAC has taken the plase of the old version.
Bibliomedia also claims for a moment of analysis for a possibly wider solution of problems related with managing and retrieving multimedia items and with sharing and interoperability af metadata archives.
The first part of this work was about selecting and describing (with SBN standards) the records of the Test Section of the Psychology Library: with the help of some Teachers we build the info pages for each Test.
At the present, not only Psychology Tests but also some videoclips have been processed in digital form and are available the geographic network.
A second part of the work was opening access to the whole University wide network, to other parts in our University which share the need of such services.

Project
history

The Bibliomedia Project arose since the need of organizing and describing the items of the Psychology Test Library and the will of making them available through a more flexible and useful system. Once that similar needs were discovered within other parts of our University, it was extended and therefore approved by the Inter Library Service and since then it has been supported by the University of Padova as an official project.
This work was formerly introduced the 5th of December 1997, in Venice, within the Angela Vinay 9th Seminar, by means of a prototype server.

The system

At the present Bibliomedia allows to search and access those items in our libraries which have been previously digitalized within the multimedia database, ie: audio and video, photos, images and such, objects which used to require a dedicated workstation.

Documents could either be reached starting from the old OPAC Web front end of the Università degli Studi di Padova, by means of the bibliographic description, or starting from the multimedia type search form, by means of a bibliographic and/or "multimedia" description, ie a description of the physical support type.

Once the document has been reached it can also be accessed in full: local and remote users, if allowed, can easy jump from the catalogue to the full information, all from the same workstation.

Bibliomedia also shows useful preview information about the document: abstracts, reviews, vocal or written comments provided by the Author or the Teacher and even references and links to other databases.

A password-based protection system has been implemented in order to protect those documents which cannot be freely accessed because of property or ethic reasons.

Tech
notes

PostgreSQL and Perl/DBI have been adopted for the database engine and the procedure for fetching data from the OPAC Web software engine. The HTTP server is Apache with Mod_perl. The static pages are generated via Website META Language while Zope and PHP have been used for the dedicated data collections.
